Hi, I’m DeCorrian Walker, and I’m a student enrolled in JMC 397 In-Depth Reporting. As part of this course, we examine and report on issues around the campus and the community. One of the issues around the campus community that caught my eye was closing of the halls during breaks such as Thanksgiving and winter. Once I began to analyze the problem and do some research to get rid of any assumptions or false information, then I knew I was ready to begin the process of going out to do interviews about the topic. I interviewed 10 foreign exchange students and 10 regular students. I got many different perspectives and stories about how students felt about the closing of halls and the “support” that Murray State University is giving to its students. All those students had one thing in common though, they believed no student should have to come out of pocket for additional cost for a break when they already pay fees for room and boarding. This led me to take a look at it from a financial as well as ethical standpoint. I reached out to housing, but they declined to comment on the subject.
Out of all the interviewed students I choose to keep only one because all the students represented the same side and the same point of view of the situation. Qianfan Li is the foreign exchange student that I choose to keep because his story hit home the most and collective seem like he was the best face to represent the struggle of all the students.
My next person in line to interview was President Jackson. As I expected he pretty much gave a public relation type of response and didn’t truly answer what he was asked. So with that being displayed I know that this story will eventually need to be followed up on. The only thing I would do differently if I could do this story all over again is I would interview President Jackson in more of an intimate setting, the same way I interviewed Dr. Robertson for my previous article.
